HKDSE Remedial Writing Course

Writing

For students who feel stuck the moment they are given a writing prompt — who struggle to fill the word count, are not sure how to start, or keep receiving the same feedback without knowing how to change — this course rebuilds the foundations that make all writing better.

Who It's For

Secondary 4 to 6 students at Level 2 or 3 in Paper 2 (Writing), or students whose writing has stalled and who need targeted support to move forward. No prior preparation is required.

What Students Will Learn

Text type mastery — the conventions and requirements of every major Paper 2 format: blog entries, formal emails, letters, reviews, articles, speeches, and reports. Students learn what distinguishes each type and how to control format, register, and audience appropriately.
Brainstorming and idea generation — structured techniques to unpack any prompt and generate enough relevant, varied content to write a complete and convincing response, even on unfamiliar topics.
Essay structure and argument development — how to organise a response clearly, develop a point beyond a surface-level observation, and build an argument that flows logically from opening to close.
Writing mechanics — for students who need it: targeted work on spelling patterns, grammar, sentence variety, and the common errors that consistently lower language scores.

Every session includes real writing practice. Students produce work and receive specific, actionable feedback from their instructor — not just a mark, but a clear account of what to do differently next time. Your instructor brings direct HKDSE experience to every session and shares the practical insights that help students understand exactly what Paper 2 examiners are looking for at each level.

This course can be combined with our Remedial Reading or Remedial Listening courses for students who need support across multiple papers.
